THE SKIN SANCTUARY

The Skin Sanctuary is a project aimed at giving women a voice who have experienced any form of domestic, family and sexual violence.

Women are often getting tattoos of powerful female mythology figures as a way to express their own stories and implement the figures' virtues into their life. In recent years, discussions among the tattoo community and those alike  have shared their stories of sex trafficking and sexual violence and have expressed that those who are tattooed are less likely to be sex trafficked due to easy identification.

Women are seeking protection in the identity of tattoos - a form of self protection, self expression, individual's stories and experiences and using their tattoos as a last line of defence.

Western Sydney University acknowledges the peoples of the Darug, Tharawal, Eora and Wiradjuri nations. We also acknowledge that the teaching and learning currently delivered across our campuses is a continuance of the teaching and learning that has occurred on these lands for tens of thousands of years.
