HANKIKI

Hankiki is a celebration of Queer history and self-expression, reviving the iconic Hanky Code—a coded signalling system used by Queer men in the 1970s.

This project blends historical semiotics with modern design, creating bold and stylish hankies that honour Queer culture, kink, and individuality. By reimagining these symbols in a contemporary way, Hankiki offers a fresh take on identity and pride, empowering the Queer community to reclaim parts of their heritage often overlooked by mainstream culture.

Each design strikes a balance between tradition and innovation, letting today’s generation wear their identity with confidence and authenticity.

Western Sydney University acknowledges the peoples of the Darug, Tharawal, Eora and Wiradjuri nations.
