About

Hi! My name is Amy Josephine, I’m an emerging creative based in Dharug and GuriNgai land, NSW.

I’m a big daydreamer, with a practice based in handmade, whimsy, and colour. I love drawing from my visual arts and craft skills to create unique design solutions.

For me, visual communication is a powerful tool for societal change, which is why I love to use illustration as a way to explore my culture, language, and community, as well as propel other eco-social causes.

BUTTERFLY HANDS

My major work is a children’s picture book that focuses on the beauty of language and alternative ways of communicating. With an emphasis on Auslan, as a bridge for connection and friendship, the story follows a young deaf girl and a non-verbal monster as they learn to communicate with one another.

Inspired by my own experiences growing up without deaf representation, my major work to not only fill the gap of positive disability representation in children’s media, but also aims to reframe the idea that spoken language is superior to sign language.

Western Sydney University acknowledges the peoples of the Darug, Tharawal, Eora and Wiradjuri nations. We also acknowledge that the teaching and learning currently delivered across our campuses is a continuance of the teaching and learning that has occurred on these lands for tens of thousands of years.
